Chapter 7: Unexpected Discovery

Grecia

Feeling like a total outsider in the midst of the happy gathering, Grecia edged her way toward the big silver door leading to the B&B’s steak restaurant. There would be no slipping through the side exit from the kitchen without ushering in a very noticeable blast of April breezes, so this was her best plan of escape.

Harley’s gift of a home with acreage to his son had provided the perfect distraction. Crew’s expression was so stunned by the enormity of the gesture, that Grecia knew his lowly ranch security guard was the last thing on his mind at the moment. He was surrounded by his family and friends. He didn’t need her anymore. She was merely the hired help, the woman he’d already threatened to fire outright if she got in his way again.

She tiptoed backward from the room, opening the door just enough to ease through it. On the other side, she held the doorknob to ensure the door closed slowly and noiselessly behind her. Then she whirled around so quickly that she nearly tripped over a chair that one of the customers had left pulled out from the nearest dining table.

She made her way between the linen-draped round tables to the waiting area in the front of the barn. It served both the restaurant and the B&B. Normally, she paused an extra moment to admire the deer antler chandeliers and pine bough greenery draped on the second-story balcony railings. It was a cozy lounge area that Bree had recently redecorated with a scattering of distressed leather couches and chairs. Iron lanterns rested nearby atop rustic pine end tables.

This morning, however, it felt like yet more stuff that didn’t belong to Grecia and would never. It was time to face the facts. No amount of wearing jeans and cowgirl boots was ever going to make her a member of this close-knit group that everyone else claimed felt like a family. Grecia could look the part and act the part all she wanted, but she was never going to be one of them.

She trudged across the gravel driveway with her hands stuffed in the pockets of her new fleece-lined suede blazer. Yeah, she’d been dumb enough to spend a significant amount of her first paycheck on the soft beige-colored jacket, yet another one of her useless efforts to fit in. Oh, well. I tried. It least the jacket would keep her warm.

A male voice shouted something behind her, but she kept her head down. She had no family and only a handful of friends in the world, most of whom worked next door at K&G Security. It was unlikely the man was speaking to her.

Since the ranch management clearly had no plans to hold their regular morning meeting, she made her way to the horse barn. She might as well exercise a horse while making her first patrol of the day. Instead of heading inside the white pole barn, however, she paused outside by the corral.

The head horse trainer, Elara, was working with a white stallion in the ring this morning.
